Herb Supplies For The Larder

Using basic herbs in your cooking is sure to spice up the taste your food. If you are the type who loves being in the kitchen for longer periods then it is a good idea if you think of planting some herbs in your backyard or the garden. You can also plant some basic herbs near your kitchen window and then dry them of use later. Some of the most essentially used herbs in everyday cooking are rosemary, lemon thyme, basil and oregano to name a few. Many people prefer to include herbs in their regular cooking as they help in spicing up food.

Find the right place to grow them:

If you have adequate place around your home then you can plant some of these herbs. Herb plants are delicate and accordingly a site which is free from hail, wind and frost should be chosen. Also ensure that the place if kept free from pests and weeds, and if you have a pet at home, you can even fence the area where you have planted the herbs. Quality of the soil, water supply and sunlight, proper drainage are some of the factors to be considered while planting herbs. As herb plants are delicate they need to be kept in shadow most of the time as they cannot withstand strong heat.

Store them correctly:

You can keep regular supplies of herbs in your kitchen by drying them thoroughly and storing them in glass containers preferably, so that you can use them in season when they are scarcely available. By storing them you can enjoy their rich taste throughout the year in your cooking. Ensure to keep the jars in a cool dry place and close them immediately after you have taken out required quantity for cooking. Labeling them will help you greatly in finding them whenever required. With proper storage you can use herbs for a long time.

Each of these herbs has their own scent and fragrances and can fill your garden with these scents. Most of these herbs are perennials and can help in filling up garden space with their colorful shades of green as well as their thick foliage. Loose soil may be required for most of the herbs, so ensure to improve the soil layer if required. Local gardening shops have almost everything you require for growing healthy herb plants in your garden. Different herb plants require different types of soil, so if you do not have the knowledge then you can consult your local gardening shop or gardener for necessary tips.
